About the Adolescent Health Study
The Adolescent Health Study (AHS) is a UKRI-funded initiative creating a longitudinal population study to track the health and wellbeing of young people in the UK over at least 10 years. The study aims to recruit over 100,000 participants, collecting data through questionnaires, bio-samples, and linked administrative records in health, education, and social care.
AHS emphasizes inclusive engagement with adolescents, parents, schools, and communities to ensure representation across diverse backgrounds and experiences.
The study is designed to generate a globally leading open science research platform and enable a wide range of research on physical and mental health determinants during adolescence and young adulthood.
Role Overview
The Research Officer will play a pivotal role in the development, coordination, and implementation of the AHS pilot study. This includes supporting methodological design, co-developing materials, drafting protocols and ethics submissions, and ensuring operational readiness. The officer will contribute to literature reviews, tool testing, and stakeholder engagement with schools, adolescents, and parents.
This position is essential for ensuring the pilot and full-scale study are scientifically robust, ethically sound, and effectively implemented.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Evaluation:
- Conduct literature reviews on adolescent health determinants and assess tools for field-based research
- Summarize existing evidence and identify knowledge gaps to inform study design
- Support qualitative and quantitative research activities during pilot phase
- Contribute to public engagement and involvement activities
Piloting Design & Planning:
- Assist in developing pilot protocols and frameworks
- Draft documentation for ethics approvals
- Design, test, and refine questionnaires and visit processes
- Prepare recruitment materials and assist in school engagement
Data Collection & Fieldwork Support:
- Coordinate logistics for fieldwork
- Prepare training materials for field staff
- Support training and supervision of data collectors
- Assist in on-site data collection and adherence to ethical standards
Piloting Coordination & Administration:
- Support meetings and workshops on study workstreams
- Document and manage piloting findings, including version control
- Assist senior project manager in tracking timelines, risks, and progress
- Take minutes and respond to stakeholder queries
Candidate Requirements
Essential:
- Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, social sciences, or related field
- Experience supporting research studies, preferably in adolescent or population health
- Strong analytical skills to translate complex findings into actionable insights
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for protocol writing and stakeholder engagement
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable:
- PhD in relevant field (or near completion)
- Experience in adolescent health, youth development, or related public health areas
- Familiarity with research ethics submissions and study design principles
- Experience developing or adapting research instruments and working with schools or young people
Role Dimensions
- Full-time, flexible working arrangements
- National travel required across UK study sites
